Description

A long time coming, we think that Mac Job's latest Air Disaster volume has been well worth the wait.

Unlike the previous three editions, Air Disaster 4 visits the postwar propliner era, chronicling in 20 chapters a range of technical and operational problems which befell piston and turboprop powered airliners between 1950 and 1971.

Some of the accidents are as spectacular as the results are tragic - the midair collision of a TWA Super Constellation and a United DC-7 over the Grand Canyon, the mysterious disappearance of a Pan American Stratocruiser over the jungles of Brazil, the loss of a chartered DC-6 carrying the UN secretary general in colonial Africa.

One chapter details a remarkable survival - a US Air Force C-97 which struggled across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii on two engines. Others chronicle the spate of accidents which brought down the Lockheed Electra, an unintentional ditching of a KLM Super Constellation in the Shannon Estuary, Ireland, and a Pan American Stratocruiser which ditched in the Pacific.

Thoroughly researched, well written and easily read, Macarthur's book gives the reader an excellent appreciation of these events, explaining what happened and why. His text is complemented by specially commissioned artwork by Juanita Franzi which help the reader to visualise just how the accidents occurred.
